  • History and Origin:

As the name suggests, the dog originated in the Indian subcontinent. Indian pariah dogs are one of the oldest dog breeds in existence today. Lots of archaeological findings indicate that the Indian Pariah dog might have existed since more than 4500 years ago. Some findings (although unconfirmed) also suggest that Indian Pariah dogs might have existed before the complete evolution of humans itself. There are also various paintings that have been cited on ancient caves that suggest that the Indian Pariah Dog might be one of the oldest existing breeds in the Indian subcontinent (and possibly the world too) They are very commonly found in – India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Afghanistan. However, their existence is not limited to these regions alone.

  • Description:

They are medium-sized dogs that are built in a slightly rectangular manner. They are long dogs (meaning, their bodies are longer than they are taller) with double coats which usually have a short coat. Their eyes are brown and they have foreheads that are wedge-shaped and medium-sized. The most prominent color among this breed is brown – the shades range from the lightest to almost sard reddish-brown. There are some black dogs as well (albeit not very common).

It is also very important for their health and temperament that they are kept active regularly. Due to their active nature, Indian Pariah dogs will love their training time and can grasp them fairly quickly.

  • Temperament: Indian Pariah dogs are intelligent dogs (they may not be particularly known for this trait but they are quite receptive) which means that they are quite friendly and yet curious with strangers. They are known for being fiercely loyal, watchful and courageous in addition to being obedient and easy to train. They are sometimes said to have aggressive behavioral tendencies – however, they are not very hard to subdue and if they are properly trained from the get-go, they are one of the most adorable dogs to have.

  • Vocalness: Sometimes, they can be quite loud and vocal with their barking due to their primal, instinctual tendencies, however, they can be trained to not bark on command.
