Pawpedia: All you need to know about Siamese cats

Cat sitting services

Cats are extremely adorable creatures that a lot of us absolutely cannot stop loving. Among them, Siamese cats are one of the most popular breeds of cats people choose to get. They are known for their majestic, beautiful and striking looks and cuddly demeanor.

They are usually social with people (when compared to most other cat breeds) and mostly only want your love and attention. Like most cats, Siamese cats  are quite independent and do not require your constant supervision. After a long, tiring day at work, coming home to a Siamese cat giving you attention might just be exactly what you need. They are also very accepting of affection and will love the fact that you completely adore them.

We know you probably want to know all about this majestic breed so, here are some basic facts that you might want to know about Siamese cats –

  • History and Origin: This breed of cats originated in Thailand (It is called Siamese because Thailand was originally called “Siam”). Siamese cats have been documented in books as old as (possibly) 1351 AD which makes it one of the oldest domesticated cats to exist in the world. Although Siamese cats are of Asian origin, they are quite popular in North America and Europe.

  • Description (most common): They are known for their strikingly beautiful features – almond-shaped blue eyes, triangular shaped head, elongated yet muscular body, large ears and point coloration (dark-colored body parts in the extremes). Some Siamese cats have a more round-ish face and really dark extremities.

  • Average weight:

Females: 3.5 kgs to 5.5 kgs

Males: 4.8 kgs to 6.8 kgs

Females: 10.5 inches to 12.2 inches

Males: 11.5 inches to 12.5 inches

  • Average lifespan: 12 to 20 years.

However, the oldest Siamese cat is known to have lived for 30 years. Sometimes, they can live up to only 8-9 years. Lifespan of Siamese cats usually hinges upon several factors that include their genes, their phenotype, the environment they grow up in and the amount (and kind) of food they are provided with.

  • Activity: Siamese cats are majestic-looking athletic breeds. They are known to be very active and playful – even after they grow up and mature. They like to be with people and keep themselves engaged. They are not very fussy but they thrive on attention.

  • Temperament: Siamese cats are particularly known to be social and friendly. They often bond with a single person, however, they generally bode well with people. This also means they do not take well to being left alone for long periods of time and if they are, they tend to develop depression or separation anxiety.

  • Vocalness: They are known for having a loud, low-pitched voice and are generally quite vocal.

  • Shedding and grooming: Siamese cats typically have very short fur and an extremely clean-looking majestic coat. This means, even though like every other cat, they will shed hair while regrowing them, their shedding might not be too messy. However, they do need regular grooming to keep them healthy, clean and neat.

  • Training: Siamese cats are known to be quite intelligent and smart. When it comes to training, they grasp it quite fast and are relatively easy to train. Like while training any other animal, patience, kindness and willingness to teach them politely is important. If you possess all these qualities while training them, the process can be quite simple.
